I am offering here two beautiful early lithographs by the well-known nineteenth century printmakers Currier and Ives.
These have passed through my wife's family for many decades and, although I myself am not an expert, as far as I can determine, they are original prints.
One is a color portrait of George Washington while the other is a black and white image of his tomb in Mount Vernon.
Both have been protected under glass in these antique frames for as long as can be remembered.
Both prints, with frames included, measure 16 1/2 inches by 20 1/2 inches.
Visible at the bottom of the Mount Vernon print are the words "PUBLISHED BY CURRIER & IVES" as well as the address of the printer at "152 NASSAU ST.
NEW YORK".
This dates the print as between 1848 and 1872.
Unfortunately, the Washington portrait print has no writing visible (possibly it is hidden by the frame, but I cannot be certain), so I can't provide any further details on that one.
There is obvious wear on the lithographs, most notably some yellowing and staining, clearly visible in the photos.
The bottom right of the Washington portrait has a small chip in the glass.
Also, the frames have some paint chipping and wear.
Still, both prints are quite sturdy and can provide plenty of enjoyment to art and history lovers and collectors.
Because of their condition issues, I am offering these at a very reasonable price.
