Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Nursing, this leader assumes assigned shift responsibility and provides support to clinical units.
Monitors the care provided on the nursing units, mentors the staff and handles problems as they arise.
When required, assumes assigned shift responsibility for the Transfer Center operations, performing bed allocation for internal and external patients needing bed assignment at MVHS throughout the system.
Core Job Responsibilities
Arranges staffing levels for the shift.
Responds to emergency code situations and monitors the care delivered to patients on the nursing units.
Follows up on shift/daily issues and concerns brought by staff, supervisors and managers.
Supervises daily bed management meetings.
Provides input into employee productivity and job performance in collaboration with unit manager.
Communicates with AOC (Administrator on Call) as required.
Responds to concerns from staff, patients or families in the absence of the Nurse Manager, and as assigned.
Completes administrative reports to Nurse Executive Committee, Nursing Leadership Committee and other committees as requested.
Collaborates with Staffing Coordinators and Nurse Managers with regard to staffing requirements.
Data collection and evaluation as designated by Nurse Manager
Offers staff coaching as needed in guidance to hospital policies/procedures.
Provides feedback to managers
Responsible for patient flow.
Responsible for patient bed allocation from the Emergency Department.
Also responsible for patient bed allocation from external sources, always adhering to EMTALA regulations.
Assists Patient Allocation Coordinators in Transfer Center with bed placement for patients by obtaining reports from internal and external physicians to determine requested level of care availability.
Manages the nursing care safety and environment of care processes and care services to patients in accordance with New York State nurse practice act, regulatory standards and MVHS policies, practices and procedures, including but not limited to:
Providing service excellence to patients and their families/visitors that meets or exceeds patient expectations through offering empathetic and compassionate patient-centered care;
Professionally manages patients, families and care givers needs and concerns using positive service recovery methods;
Responds to patient requests and makes active referrals to subject matter expert/decision maker who can fulfill the patient request; Provide culturally sensitive care.
Maintains compliance with regulatory agency requirements, including but not limited to; activation of Incident Command in situations of internal or external disaster situations, responding to HEICS inquiry from New York State Department of Health and utilization of E-FINDS in situations when patients are moving in and or out of MVHS in disaster situations.
Performs other duties as required.
Education/Experience Requirements
REQUIRED:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
Minimum 2 years of nursing in an Acute Care setting.
Demonstrated ability to lead, guide and motivate others.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
PREFERRED:
One year critical care nursing.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
REQUIRED:
Valid, unrestricted License as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York.
BLS, ACLS certification.
