Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Medical Director, Director of Laboratory Services, and Laboratory Business Manager.
Is responsible for the onboarding and training of new laboratory employees in laboratory fundamentals and phlebotomy procedures.
Develops, conducts and evaluates in-service programs, orientation and continuing education programs for laboratory staff, students, and other staff as requested.
Serves as a resource person to staff and management.
Participates in Performance Improvement activities and serves on committees as assigned.
Responsible for evaluating the competency of employees in phlebotomy and office procedures.
Responsible for maintaining and/or coordinating training and competency documentation in all areas of the lab.
Provides educational sessions to new hires and assist in onboarding orientation program of all incoming laboratory staff.
Core Job Responsibilities
Utilizes technical skills as described in job description for laboratory assistant to provide assistance to maintain work flow.
Obtains proper blood specimens from “difficult” patients as needed.
Provides orientation and training for new laboratory staff and students.
Maintains required records of training and orientation.
Evaluates employees for competency in phlebotomy and office procedures.
Determines the priority of requests to arrange work loads to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.
Trains incoming staff on how to arrange workload.
Maintains applicable procedure manual, revising and/or developing procedures as needed.
Ensures proper PPE is worn by all laboratory staff.
Monitors quality assurance as assigned by Director of Laboratory Service or Laboratory Business Manager (Including but not limited to: Blood culture contamination rate, redraw rate)
In collaboration with department supervisors, ensure all employees are up to date with proper annual health evaluations and vaccinations with the employee health office to ensure no lapse in patient care.
Ensure all SEMC Laboratory employees are up to date on MVHS mandatory education and laboratory educational assignments.
Education/Experience Requirements
Education: Minimum of a High School Diploma or Equivalent and must have work experience in a clinical laboratory.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years in a Licensed New York State Clinical Laboratory.
Special equipment, skills or other requirements:
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Concentration needed to assimilate information from many different sources
• Extensive skills in Microsoft office suite including Word and PowerPoint.
• Ability to operate equipment: projectors, audiovisual equipment, cameras, other equipment used in instruction and patient care
• Excellent presentation skills
• Must have experience public speaking and be comfortable talking in front of large groups.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
Valid NYS Driver’s License
